First of all: no two dogs are alike. A confident, outgoing puppy might feel at home within hours, while a more sensitive, cautious small dog might need several days—or even a couple of weeks—to truly relax. Both are completely normal.

Start Acclimatization at Home Well Before the First Day

Most stress comes from a dog being overwhelmed by too many new things all at once. You can break this down into smaller pieces. If your pet is rarely left alone, it is worth practicing short, calm separations weeks in advance: a few minutes in another room, then ten minutes, then half an hour. The key is to make absence feel like a boring routine rather than a dramatic event.

Similarly, it helps to practice situations they will encounter on a daycare day: car rides, wearing a harness or collar for extended periods, proximity to unfamiliar people, and seeing other dogs off-leash in open areas. Once these are familiar individually, managing them together becomes much easier.

Stick to the Usual Routine

The evening before the first day should be nothing out of the ordinary. Don't host a farewell play marathon, don't change feeding times, and don't introduce new dog food that day—their stomach will already be more sensitive on an exciting day. What remains consistent at home gives your dog an anchor, even when everything else changes around them.

Regarding feeding, standard practice is to avoid giving their morning meal immediately before leaving. An earlier breakfast followed by a quiet break before departing is usually enough to prevent them from running around on a full stomach.

Exercise Before—But Not to Exhaustion

A calm morning walk helps a lot: it takes the edge off built-up energy, allowing your dog to arrive relaxed and with an empty bladder and bowel. However, it’s easy to overdo it here. The goal isn't for your pet to stumble through the door exhausted—an overtired dog is more irritable, handles new stimuli poorly, and deals less effectively with meeting other dogs.

A leisurely sniffing walk is a better choice than an intense game of fetch. Sniffing has a naturally calming effect and promotes the relaxed state of mind needed for the rest of the day.

Bring Something Familiar—and Keep Farewells Short

A familiar blanket, a favorite toy, or a mat smelling like home might seem small, but for many dogs, it acts as an anchor to help them settle in an unfamiliar place. There’s no need to pack an entire suitcase: one or two familiar items are usually worth more than elaborate preparation.

Farewells are where most owners—with the best intentions—make things harder for their dogs. A long, emotional, apologetic goodbye signals to the dog that something big and scary is happening. A short, confident "bye, see you soon" helps much more. Dogs read tone of voice and posture exceptionally well: if you are calm, it reassures them too.

• Keep the previous evening and morning routine normal—no new food, no extra excitement.
• Take a calm, sniffing walk before leaving.
• Pack a familiar blanket or toy.

Give It Time—The First Days Are Not the Final Result

When you bring them home, you might be alarmed by what you see: many dogs are much more tired than usual after their first days, sleeping more and showing less interest in activity. This is usually not a sign of trouble, but rather of processing a huge amount of new stimuli—mental stimulation is at least as exhausting as physical exertion. The best thing you can do is let them rest and refrain from overloading them with more plans.

The opposite can also happen: some dogs return home overly energized and struggle to wind down. For them, a quiet, darker resting spot and some peace help the most. Both reactions are normal and usually level out after a few sessions.

Most importantly: acclimatization is not a race. If your dog is cautious, don't compare them to the dog that dives into play from minute one. The goal isn't for them to be the center of attention right away, but to feel safe. Everything else will follow naturally.
